The purpose of this online handbook is to provide a forum for conceptual reflections, practical experiences and methodological guidance on transformative creative and visual storytelling methods.
In relation to this, the content draws on the expertise from the researchers and practitioners engaged in the Citizen Engagement through Visual Participatory Processes project, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Participate, but also recognises that this knowledge and the innovations in processes and methods that evolved were co-constructed with wider collaborators. The site aims to promote the continuation of this co-generation of knowledge and practice in order to further to grow a community of engaged actors – researchers, activists, programme and policymakers.
The development of an online tool relates to a recognition of the relationship between the methods and digital technology, the importance of visual and interactive engagement to support the learning process, also of continued and iterative learning through the inclusion of new content from diverse partners over time, and to share the knowledge generated through visual approaches in their original format. We also feel that the online approach would enable wider reach and accessibility for a more diverse audience within the resources available.
The website would not have been possible without the financial support from SDC and Participate (DFID).
Vision for the future
A particular emphasis over the course of the following 12 months will be the uploading of methodology case studies, which bring the practical guidance to life, and evolving the blog function and usage. During the first 12 months of launching we will also be evaluating and seeking resources for the continued management of the site.
